"Surfing the Web for our next president
By Jordan Bartel, Plugged In Friday, March 16, 2007
A simple worksheet was my formal introduction to presidential politics.
I was in fifth grade. It was 1992, when incumbent George Bush was working to fight off Bill Clinton to get a second term. And there was a rascally fellow named H. Ross Perot in the mix.
Of course, back in 1992, there were barely any Web sites or things called blogs or Webcams. Now, a presidential candidate, or, more likely their staff members, have to be as tech savvy as they are knowledgeable about Iraq to win a campaign.
Judge for yourself. Here's a sample of some major candidate sites. Surfing the Web for candidates is a dangerous sport. I'm here to help:
Candidate: John McCain
Web site: www.johnmccain.com
Color scheme: Not so much. It's mostly a black-and-white affair, save for a few color pics of McCain himself. Nice new haircut, by the way.
He wants you to remember: His military service. Immediately on his bio page you learn he's the son and grandson of distinguished Navy admirals, next to a photo of him in his own Navy uniform.
Something you probably didn't know: McCain's wife Cindy serves on the board of directors for Operation Smile.
Video: There's a lot. A video page shows McCain talking about everything from the environment to his faith and 'right to life.'
Blog: A comprehensive blog page allows visitors to start their own campaign blog or read other blogs in the 'conservative blogosphere'
Slightly odd: The icky title"
